An American Broadcast Journalist, Syndicted Columnist, Investigative Reporter and Author, Amy Goodman was born on 13th April, 1957 in Washington DC, U.S. She is well known producer for ‘Are We Still the Ugly American? (2008)’, ‘Crude (2009)’, and ‘Split: A Divided America (2008)’. She also worked in an Independent global news program “democracy now!” as a presenter that broadcast daily on radio, television and in the Internet.

Well, she is also known for her investigative journalism career her role in Nigeria for the coverage of the ‘East Timor Independence Movement’ and ‘Chevron Corporation’. Her works and efforts that she put towards Journalism had reached at top height that people began to recognize and reward her. She received numerous prestigious awards, that includes the ‘Thomas Merton Award (2004)’, ‘Right Livelihood Award (2008)’, ‘Izzy Award (2009)’ and she was even recognized for the contribution in promoting international peace where she received ‘Gandhi Peace Award’ in 2012. Recently, she is writing books and has been the author of five books such as ‘The Silenced Majority: Stories of Uprisings’, ‘Occupations’, ‘Resistance’ and ‘Hope’

Amy was born and raised by her father, George Goodman, by profession he was an ophthalmologist and her mother, Dorothy, a social worker. She was raised in Bay Shore, New York where she did schooling from Bay Shore High School and at very young age when she was 27 years old she had earned degree in Anthropology from Radcliffe College in 1984. After the graduation she spent a year studying at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor, Maine. Her career as a journalist was very challenging for her at times she even faced such a crucial situation where she was nearly killed while reporting on Indonesia’s occupation in East Timor in 1991. The coverage of the story won several awards which includes ‘Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Prize’ and ‘Alfred I. DuPont/Columbia Silver Baton’.

Since, than Amy and her Colleague, Allan Nairn, were officially banned from East Timor. There had been a bad incident in the award function program when she refused to accept the award at the Overseas Press Club in Niger, when Richard Holbrooke, the Secretary of State gave speech to his audience that emphasized on how American military had bombed a Serbian television station which gave bad impression on her image. She started her career at Pacifica Radio’s WBAI station in New York in 1985 and she also became the first journalist that allowed entering in the Peru prison where American political prisoner Lori Berenson was held. In early 90’s, since her stream as an investigative journalist, Amy and her colleague Alan Nairn had went to East Timor for the reporting on the Portuguese delegates and also had prepared to know the scenario of Human Rights in the region. During their visit, there was revolution going on from Timorese people, they were protesting on the street when they learned that the delegation had canceled the visit.

There was a chaos situation so in order to bring the under control the Indonesian Military had opened fire on the Timorese. Since, the weapons used by the Indonesian Army were supplied by American government, the two journalists were not assassinated but they were arrested and were badly stroke and tortured. In the year 2002, the documentary movie “Massacre: The Story of East Timor” was released based on their experience which recognized its popularity. Since, there is not much information about her personal life revealed in the internet and in media.
