Norville was born on 8 August, 1958 in Dalton, Georgia. She is a substitute-anchored both the weekend CBS Evening News and the NBC Nightly News. She also hosted Today on NBC. For her television works, she has received two Emmy Awards. Norville graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of Georgia situated in Athens.

Norville began her career as an anchor and reporter for local television stations in Atlanta and Chicago. At the age of twenty eight, Norville was named anchor of NBC News at Sunrise in the year 1987. She was seen as a regular substitute for co-host Jane Pauley, host Bryant Gumbel, or news anchor John Palmer on Today throughout the late 1980s. Norville replaced Palmer at the Today news desk on September 5, 1989. She also began substituting on NBC Nightly News for Tom Brokaw. Right after her appointment as Today's news anchor, she was featured as an unofficial third host. At the opening and closing of every show, she was found seating alongside the program's hosts.

She also hosted some high profile interviews on the show where she addressed some controversial topics and debate. Norville announced that she would leave MSNBC in February 2005. Norville is also a singer who has recorded an original song named "Keep On Moving" in the year 2001.
