An American Television journalist, Elizabeth Vargas was born on September 6, 1962 in Paterson, New Jersey, USA. She is an anchor of ABC's television newsmagazine 20/20 and ABC News specials. Before, she was also an anchor of World News Tonight. Elizabeth was born to Puerto Rican father, Rafael Vargas and an Irish mother, Anne Vargas. Her father was a colonel at the U.S. army so, she moved from Germany and Belgium because of her father's posting.

Vargas was enrolled at University of Missouri in Columbia, where she was graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism. There, she made her debut broadcast as a reporter/anchor for NBC affiliate KOMU-TV. Vargas also worked at WBBM-TV, an affiliate of CBS in Chicago, Illinois for 4 years. After that, Vargas moved to NBC News in 1993 as a correspondent for Dateline NBC and a sub anchor for Today. Later in June 1996, she joined Good Morning America as the newsreader. In November 2003, Vargas became anchor of WNT Sunday but it didn't last for long: she was named co-anchor of 20/20 in May 2004. Vargas also did a story based on the book The Da Vinci Code. The role of Mary Magdalene in this book helped fuel a nationwide religious debate.  Vargas also said that for centuries Mary Magdalene has been portrayed as a prostitute by the church despite evidence to the contrary and went on to question the strictly limited role of women within the church.

 In 1998 she was nominated for an Emmy Award for her 20/20 investigation into the wrongful conviction of Betty Tyson and won an Emmy Award for her coverage of the Elián González story in 1999. Vargas is also considered as the first de facto solo woman evening news anchor as she anchored many broadcasts alone after Bob Woodruff's injury in Iraq in January 2006.

Vargas announced her resignation from WNT on May 23, 2006. Vargas gave reason for resignation as her doctors' recommendation to cut back her schedule considerably owing to a difficult pregnancy and her wish to spend more time with her new baby when he arrives.

Vargas was critically addicted to alcohol and had to stay at the rehab. She also said," "I am dealing with addiction". In 2013, she left Good Morning America to enter a residential treatment center and returned to the show on January 24, 2014.
