Eric James McCormack was born on 18th April, 1963 (his age is 52 years old) in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. He was born as the eldest son to Doris and Keith McCormack. As a child, he attended Stephen Leacock Collegiate Institute High School in Ontario. He admits that he was a shy kid at school and never was popular among the crowd. He also wasn’t into sports much, but was into theatre and had performed in his school’s productions like Godspell and Pippin. It was then that he realized that he wanted to become an actor. He started to actively precipitated in small role is stage plays and low- level productions when he transferred into Sir John A. Macdonald Collegiate Institute school, from where he graduated in 1982. After graduation, he wanted to sharpen his acting skills and thus he got enrolled in Ryerson University School in Toronto. He stayed there till 1985 and later moved on to Stratford Shakespeare Festival in Ontario. His initial works were in theatre productions like A Midsummer Night's Dream, Henry V, Murder in the Cathedral and Three Sisters.

In 1986, he debuted in the Canadian TV from the film The Boys from Syracuse. Then he thought about having a career in Hollywood and so in 1991, moved to California and was casted in Top Cops, a CBS crime series. The following year, he appeared in The Lost World, a theatrical film and also in the sequel of The Lost World. He also played the role of a detective in 1993’s crime drama Street Justice. He also was casted in the 1995 TV film The man who wouldn’t die and also in 1997’s Borrowed Hearts. His negative role of a cheating husband in HBO’s Exception to the rule was widely appreciated by his critics. His break through role as of a gay-lawyer William Turner was in NBC’s Will and Grace. In 1998, he was the crew of a comedy film Holy Man. He also has his own production house Big Cattle Productions which has produced serials like Lovespring International and Imperfect Union. Apart from acting in the movies and hosting shows, he is also into singing, and recorded a song named The Greatest Discovery, which was written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin.

He has married actress Janet Holden, whom he had met in the set of Lonesome Dove. The couple were married in 1997 and in 2002, had a son together. He lives with his family in Los Angeles and also has a house in Vancouver. He and his wife live together and they haven’t been divorced. After getting the citizenship of the United States in 1999, he holds dual citizenships.
