Rufus Frederik Sewell is an English actor born on 29 October 1967 in Twickenham, England. He is best known for his role in The Woodlanders, Dark City, Meet Frank, The Illusionist, Dangerous Beauty, A Knight's Tale, Tristan and Isolde, and Martha, Daniel and Laurence. He was born to parents, William, an Australian animator, and Jo Sewell, a Welsh artist and waitress.

Sewell attended Orleans Park School, a state comprehensive school in Twickenham and later joined West Thames College. Knowing his keen interest in drama, he was sent to Central School of Speech and Drama in London where he learned comedy and acting.

In 1992, Sewell appeared in a TV series Gone to Seed, where he appeared as Billy. The same year, he was seen in Screen Two, where he played Mike Costain Clive.

Later in 1994, Sewell appeared in four TV series A Night with a Woman, a Day with Charlie, Middlemarch, Citizen Locke and A Man of No Importance. The following year, he appeared in one episode of Performance.

In 2003, he appeared in four episodes of Charles II: The Power and the Passion. Sewell was seen as Petruchio in Shakespeare-Told in the year 2005, for which he was nominated for British Academy Television Award for Best Actor.

Sewell also had the recurring role in Eleventh Hour, where he played Dr. Jacob Hood. Other TV series played by Sewell includes John Adams, The Pillars of the Earth, Zen, Parade's End, and Restless.

Sewell has also appeared in many movies. In 1996, Sewell appeared in a movie Hamlet, portraying Fortinbras and in 1998 he played in five movies such as Dangerous Beauty, Dark City, Martha, Meet Frank, Daniel and Laurence, Illuminata and At Sachem Farm.

Recently, Sewell has played a movie like Where the Devil Hides, The Sea, and All Things to All Men. His movie Hercules is scheduled to release in July of 2014, where he will appear as Autolycus.

Sewell also played the main vampire Adam in the movie Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter and also had a small role in The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp.

Sewell has played in several TV films like Arabian Nights as Ali Baba; Mermaid Chronicles Part 1: She Creature as Angus, Helen of Troy as Agamemnon.
