She was born as one of five children to Beverly and Thad Harold Harden in La Jolla, California. Because of her father’s job, she frequently moved Greece, Maryland, Japan, Germany and California.

Harden attended Surrattsville High School in Clinton, Maryland and graduated in the year 1976. Then after she joined University of Texas at Austin and attained BA in theatre. She also presented herself in popular crime drama Law & Order: Special Victims Unit. For her role in this, she was able to win Emmy Award nomination for best guest actress in the year 2007. Same year, she appeared in many films like The Mist and Into the Wild. She also appeared in Rails & Ties where she shared top billing with Kevin Bacon. In 2008, she appeared in Home as a woman who has had a mastectomy. In the same year, she appeared in Christmas Cottage. For her role in The Courageous Heart of Irena Sendler, Harden received a 2009 Emmy nomination. In similar manner, she appeared in Whip It with Ellen Page and Drew Barrymore. On June 8, nominated for the Tony Award where Harden won Best Actress in a Play.

Marcia Gay Harden was married to Thaddaeus Scheel. Her husband was a prop master. She met her husband for the first time in the set of The Spitfire Grill. She have three children with him; a daughter, Eulala Grace Scheel and twins Julitta Dee Scheel and Hudson Scheel Harden. She filed for divorce with her husband on February 2012.
